INDIAN MYNA TRAP (MINI)

Q. Are the traps easy to handle and transport?
A. The “MynaMagic” has been designed to be easy to handle and transport. It comprises a traps of 30cm x 30 cm x 60cm. This means they are easily transported in most sedan boots. Sharp edges and protrusions have also been eliminated to avoid damage to vehicles, users and the caught birds.

Q. How many people does it take to assemble the trap and is it difficult?
A. There is no assembly of the trap required. It is ready to set straight out of the box.

Q. Can the trap be used on balconies and in small backyards?
A. The trap is only 60cm x 30cm x 30cm. This makes it ideal for use in any location. This includes balconies, small backyards, rooftops and awnings. Because it is fully enclosed it can even be hooked onto fences. When placed in direct sunlight we recommend the use of shade-cloth on the top of the trap. It can be attached with cable ties. Ensure that the closing mechanism and one way funnels are clear of cloth.

Q. Can the trap blow over and injure the trapper or a passer-by?
A. Unlike two part aviary style traps the “MiniMyna” trap has a low profile so it is impossible for it to blow over.

Q. What bait do I put in the trap?
A. It has been found that dog food is highly attractive to Indian Mynas and Starlings. Purchase the dog food rolls available from your supermarket and scrape some off the roll and place on the traps pressure plate. Put some water in as well. If your local Indian Mynas and Starlings are already happily feeding on your dog, rabbits or cats current food then try that first.

Q. Is the pressure plate sensitive enough to trip the door when the Myna is in?
A. Generally yes as we have set it as finely as possible. However if you encounter a flock of very young birds it may not activate. If this happens tape a fishing sinker to the pressure plate to increase its sensitivity.

Q. What if I catch another type of bird such as a magpie?
A. Simply raise the sliding door at the end of the cage and release it. It will not be harmed.

Q. Do I have to have a free feeding time before I can catch the Indian Mynas and Starlings?
A. If you have Indian Mynas already feeding on your property you do not have to free feed. The trap can be placed in the catch position straight away. The first Indian Myna or Starling into the trap will call its flock. They arrive very quickly and find a convenient entrance on the top and are able to get inside to help or join in the devouring the free food. Once in there is no way out for them.

If you feel that free feeding would be beneficial simply wire the trap door up and place food and water inside. Once the birds have proven they like the food and have fed freely for three or four days unwire the trap door.

Q. Indian Mynas and Starlings are very aggressive, once in the trap can they peck the operator?
A. The trap is designed to frustrate any attack by the caught birds.

Q. Who is involved in the eradication program?
A. Councils, landcare groups, lands department officers, wineries, cereal and stone fruit growers, racetrack operators, horse breeders, schools and colleges, leading businesses plus hundreds of private individuals across the country.
